About Don's Seafood Hut

If you live in Acadiana - or even if you don't - there's a good chance you've dined at Don's Seafood & Steakhouse or Don's Seafood Hut. While many owe thanks to members of the Landry family for their contributions to Cajun dining, it was Don Louis Landry Sr. who established these landmark restaurants, sparking an enduring trend.

Initially, he didn't aim to revolutionize the way we think aobut Cajun cuisine. In 1934, with Prohibition lifted, the 24-year-old Lafayette native thought a restaurant and bar in the bustling downtown area might prove profitable. With $400 borrowed from his uncle, he opened Don's Beer Parlor - a casual hangout with a dirt floor where friendly folks served cold drinks & simple dishes. An avid fisherman, Don's specialty was fresh seafood from the Basin or the Gulf.

In 1939, Don's brother Ashby Landry brought his talents to the table. Don's business sense & Ashby's flair for food made for a perfect partnership. As the menu grew and the atmosphere took on a distinctly local feel, the modern Cajun restaurant was born. It wasn't the first time Cajun flavors made their way into local eateries, but no restaurateur had ever capitalized on Acadiana's unique culinary heritage or focused on indigenous ingredients the way the brothers did at their newly renamed Don's Seafood Inn.
